Elon Musk once owned massive mansions worth millions of dollars, then sold them all. For someone running some of the biggest companies in the world, it was a pretty unexpected move.
His living situation has become a big topic, with reports, denials, and even a tiny house near a rocket site all part of the story.
If you’re wondering where Elon Musk actually calls home right now, this blog breaks it down simply.
Where Does Elon Musk Live Now?
Elon Musk currently lives in Texas, splitting his time between Boca Chica, South Texas, and Austin.
His living situation is not a typical “one house, one city” setup; he moves frequently based on his work commitments across multiple companies.
There is no single confirmed primary residence, but Texas remains his main base.
From California to Texas: What Made Elon Musk Leave
Before moving to Texas, Elon Musk owned seven properties in California, six in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles, and one in Northern California.
On May 1, 2020, he tweeted, “I am selling almost all physical possessions. Will own no house,” and the sell-off followed shortly after.
His frustration with California’s high taxes, overregulation, and litigation culture pushed him out, and by the end of 2020, Texas was his new home.
He sold all seven properties between 2020 and 2021, saying owning too many things was a distraction.
Texas offered greater business freedom and a simpler lifestyle that aligned better with his personal and professional goals.

His Starbase Texas Home Story

At Starbase in Boca Chica, Musk chose to live in a tiny 375- to 400-square-foot portable unit right next to SpaceX’s launch facility.
Photos of the home went viral because seeing a billionaire live in what looked like a basic portable unit felt almost unbelievable.
The choice was never about saving money; Musk simply wanted to stay physically close to the SpaceX team and remain involved in every part of the rocket program.
What Elon Musk Is Doing Since Shifting to Texas?
Musk is one of those people who always seems to have something big going on. Since he runs companies like Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, Neuralink, Starlink, and X, his work spans many areas.
Right now, his major work includes:
- Building Terafab, a huge AI chip manufacturing project in Austin, Texas.
- Using the project to support Tesla’s self-driving cars, Optimus robots, and SpaceX’s work.
- Expanding Starlink, his satellite internet service.
- Growing Neuralink, which works on brain-computer technology.
- Running Colossus, a powerful AI supercomputer based in Memphis.
- Working on space-based AI hardware through SpaceX and xAI.
The Terafab project is especially huge because it is said to need around $55 billion to get started. The goal is to make powerful AI chips that can help run several of Musk’s biggest projects at the same time.

One Response
The modern space age looking mini portable housing/trailer project showed on line several years ago, starting at 10k and up. What’s up with that, no where online had anywhere to purchase. The design, style, and price were great. That could also replace conventional housing we grow up as a kid to buy with mortgage.
