Afroman has remixed his 2001 hit song 'Because I Got High' in support of the legalisation of marijuana. Watch the video below.

The original version of the song was a tongue-in-cheek, melodramatic faux-indictment of smoking weed, and included lyrics such as: "I messed up my entire life because I got high / I lost my kids and wife because I got high / Now I'm sleeping on the sidewalk and I know why - cause I got high."

In partnership with lobbying group Norml, as well as the weed dispensary directory Weedmaps, Afroman's remix says, "Anxiety attacks, but then I got high / I used to take Xanax, but then I got high / No more prescription pills and I know why, 'cause I got high."

Speaking to Billboard of the remix, Sabrina Fendrick, director of strategic partnerships at Norml, said "There’s a line about anxiety and Xanax and no longer needing to take presciption pills, and marijuana being a substitute for alcohol, money going to building schools in Colorado, funding drug treatment in Washington. Every single verse in this song is accurate and can be corroborated by research."

As the initiative to legalise marijuana in the US gains traction, there are curently ballot initiatives to legalise the drug in states such as Alaska, Washington D.C., and Oregon.
