Chord Overstreet has become the highest-profile star to be axed from the show as the hit series enters its third season.

The actor - who plays Sam Evans - may return as an occasional guest star, according to Deadline.

Overstreet seemed to confirm the news when he wrote on Twitter: "Well its been a good yr too bad its over, time for summer and starting fresh."

According to the report, Darren Criss and Harry Shum Jr have earned promotions to full cast members, where they will resprise their respective roles of Blaine Anderson and Mike Chang.

Regular guest star Ashley Fink's role is also expected to be reduced in future episodes.

Having been a staple of the E4 fixture list, fans will instead have to tune in to Sky to get their Glee fix when the show returns this Autumn.

When movie stars go feral

  • Charlie Sheen - The drug taking, drink-downing, wife beating (allegedly), boss-fighting, ultimate loose cannon. Only Charlie Sheen can possibly believe that he is, indeed, winning.

  • Lindsay Lohan - If the drugs and the alcohol don't get you, then the shoplifting certainly will. Currently under house-detention for breaking parole on a sentence handed down after stealing a necklace from a California jewellers.

  • Mickey Rourke - As if taking time out of your acting to pursue a pointless career in boxing isn't bad enough, Rourke serves as the ultimate example of what happens when facelifts go wrong. Not to mention the drink binges and arrest for spousal abuse...

  • Corey Feldman - He's out the other side now, but the star of 80s classics Stand By Me and Goonies battled severe drink and drug problems in the 1990s.

  • Robert Downey, Jr - Back on top of Hollywood, but only after a few years in the wilderness that involved drug abuse, prison sentences, rehab, and waking up in his next door neighbour's bed completely stoned.

  • Drew Barrymore - Not many people can say they were put into rehab aged just 13, but Drew can. Her starring role in ET caused Drew to grow up fast, and she was battling drink and drug addiction before she even hit puberty. A stint in soft porn followed, as did suicide attempts, but Barrymore was able to conquer her demons, becoming one of the Queens of romantic comedies.

  • Colin Farrell - A hell raiser of the highest order, Farrell's dependance on drugs and prescription painkillers led to a successful spell in rehab in 2005. Didn't stop him having a sex tape leaked, though...

  • Martin Lawrence - The Bad Boys star clearly loves his guns. Arrested in 1996 for brandishing a pistol, he found himself in handcuffs later that year for thinking it was okay to pack a gun in his luggage at Los Angeles Airport.

  • Carrie Fisher - First emerging as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy, Fisher spent most of the next twenty years battling drug addicition and mental illness.

  • River Phoenix - a bonafide poster boy of the late 1980's and early 1990's, Phoenix's promising life was cut short aged 23 when he died of a heroin-cocaine overdose at the Viper Room, Los Angeles.
