REM fans have been paying tribute to the band, who announced yesterday (September 21) that they have split up after over three decades together.
The band, fronted by Michael Stipe, decided to call it a day after 15 albums, telling fans that they would “walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished”.
Fans of the band have been quick to tell Gigwise what they think of the news.
“This is sad news...a truly great band, and they will be missed, but the music lives on,” Mel Afc Bennett said on Gigwise's Facebook comments.
Alan Greenway said: “My Generation's Beatles.”
While Kathryn Davidson also wrote on Facebook: “Love their music, a sad day but nothing lasts for ever. They made a great band.”
In his own statement, Stipe said:"A wise man once said: 'The skill in attending a party is knowing when it’s time to leave. We built something extraordinary together.”
REM released their last album 'Collapse Into Now' earlier this year.
