    • Film news: 'Dark Shadows' meets with mixed reviews Tim Burton's new Johnny Depp film underwhelms critics after premiere By Michael Baggs on 10 May 2012
Film news: 'Dark Shadows' meets with mixed reviews

Tim Burton's latest gothic spectacular has met with decidedly mixed reviews following it's premiere, splitting critics neatly down the middle in early reviews.

Scoring an underwhelming 49% on movie review aggregator Rottentomatoes.com, the movie is looking unlikely to rival either Burton's - or star Johnny Depp's - most loved work.

While Empire magazine says: "This is not the knockabout comedy the trailer suggests. Instead, it cleaves closer to what you expect from Burton: darkness, quirk and Johnny Depp on great form," many US reviewers have been less kind about the vampire movie.

"Johnny Depp and Tim Burton enable each other's laziest, most indulgent habits: They make movies to entertain themselves instead of the audience," says the Miami Herald and famed US critic Roger Ebert comments: "It offers wonderful things, but they aren't what's important. It's as if Burton directed at arm's length, unwilling to find juice in the story."

TV news: BBC viewers crisis as Eastenders hits new low

Following plummeting ratings on talent show The Voice, the BBC is now struggling with its flagship soap opera - with Eastenders' viewing figures falling to an all-time low.

Viewing figures for the show have fallen to just 5.7million, the lowest recorded in the show's 27 year history. The BBC is said to making drastic moves to recover, with several characters set for the axe.

First on the list is Anthony Moon actor Matt Lapinskas, who follows soap favourites Pam St Clement, Patsy Palmer and Sid Owen in leaving the soap. Many blame the loss of popular characters on the show's decline, and the sacking of further, newer characters seems certain.

Future storylines are said to include one seeing long-running characters Billy Mitchell carrying the Olympic torch through Walford during a live show this summer.
