Gil Scott-Heron has died at the age of 62, it’s been confirmed.
The American musician and poet, who was described as the “Godfather of Rap", passed away at a hospital in New York on Friday (May 27).
A cause of death is not clear, but the Associated Press said reported that Scott-Heron had fallen ill after returning home from a trip to Europe.
Scott-Heron was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1949 but spent much of his early childhood in Jackson, Tennessee.
His most record album ‘I’m New Here’ was released last year via XL Recordings.
Scott-Heron showed his versatility as an artist by releasing a remixed edition fo the album with dubstep producer Jamie xx.
