Gil Scott-Heron, the American musician and poet, has died at the age of 62.
Described as the “Godfather of Rap”, a title he himself disliked, Scott-Heron influenced the origins of rap music with his spoken-word performances.
One of music’s most versatile artists, Scott-Heron enjoyed a renaissance in 2010 with the album ‘I’m New Here’, which was later remixed by the British dubstep producer Jamie xx.
He died on Friday (May 27) at a hospital in New York, a friend said. A cause of death has not been released.
