Elbow's Guy Garvey has revealed that he is not a fan of Nirvana.

In recent interview with Q magazine the frontman was asked: 'Is there a classic act or album from that last 25 years that leaves you cold?'

Garvey replied: "Nirvana. I don't f*cking get it. Kurt Cobain was angry and frustrated. And then he died. That's terrible but i'm not sure about the music."

He added: "My problem with Nirvana is that even though he died and he wrote a lot of songs about being unhappy and frustrated it doesn't quite ring true for me. It doesn't quite validate those somgs for me. I still don't believe in them any more that I did."

Meanwhile, Elbow will play a special one-off homecoming show in Manchester next month.

The band will play Manchester Cathedral as part of a unique concert with BBC Radio 2 on October 27.

Celebrating 20 Years Of Nirvana's 'Nevermind'

  • ‘Nevermind’ is the second studio album by Nirvana, released on September 24, 1991

  • Despite not being an initial success, by January 1992, ‘Nevermind’ had replaced Michael Jackson's album 'Dangerous' at number one on the Billboard charts.

  • Rolling Stone magazine gave the album four out of five stars; reviewer Ira Robbins wrote, "If Nirvana isn't onto anything altogether new, Nevermind does possess the songs, character and confident spirit to be much more than a reformulation of college radio's high-octane hits.’’

  • Produced by Butch Vig, ‘Nevermind’ was the group's first release on DGC Records.

  • ‘Nevermind’ has now sold sold over 30 million copies worldwide

  • The ‘Nevermind’ album cover shows a baby swimming toward a US dollar bill on a fishhook. According to Cobain, he came up with the idea while watching a television program on water births with Dave Grohl.

  • Concerns were raised over the image of the babies penis on the cover by the band’s label. Cobain made it clear that the only compromise he would accept was a sticker covering the penis that would say, "If you're offended by this, you must be a closet pedophile."

  • Many of the songs written for ‘Nevermind’ were about Cobain's dysfunctional relationship with Tobi Vail. Cobain said in an interview with Musician that "some of my very personal experiences, like breaking up with girlfriends and having bad relationships, feeling that death void that the person in the song is feeling–very lonely, sick."

  • The back cover of the album features a photograph of a rubber monkey in front of a collage created by Cobain.

  • Kurt Cobain cited the Pixies as a main influence on the album for their use of loud/quiet song dynamics. Along with R.E.M. and The Smithereens.
