The Pet Shop Boys are set to release the music for their first ever full-length ballet, it's been announced.
The album, entitled The Most Incredible Thing, will be available on March 14.
The ballet is a collaboration with choreographer Javier De Frutos and Britain’s leading dance theatre, Sadler’s Wells.
Based on the Hans Christian Anderson story of the same title, the ballet tells the story of a competition in a mythical kingdom where the King announces that whoever invents the most incredible thing will win the hand of the Princess in marriage and half of the Kingdom.
The Pet Shop Boys composed most of Act One in autumn, 2008, and the rest of the score in 2010. Both acts contain a combination of electronics and orchestra.
“In the past we have written dance music so to write music for a ballet seems like a logical development,” they said. “Also we have always been fascinated by giving our music a theatrical context.”
The Most Incredible Thing runs at Sadler’s Wells in London from March 17-26 2011.
