Valerie June is all set to release her first album as a signed artist, and it's something that it seems we've all been waiting for.

Valerie's been making music for what feels like forever, but over the past year she's started to gather hype and everyone's talking about her. From her performance at last year's Bestival, to her appearance on Later... with Jools Holland and her current support slot with Jake Bugg on his February 2013 UK tour, Valerie's brand of country blues is starting to gather momentum.

With good reason, too. Her southern sound encompasses a wide range of influences, including blues, folk, soul, gospel and bluegrass. We were more than happy to catch up with her, to hear a performance of song and have a quick chat into the bargain.

As well as performing her track 'You Can't Be Told', the Tennessee born singer-songwriter spoke to Gigwise about her earliest musical memory, why country blues isn't going anywhere and above all, following her heart...
