Footballers just can't keep their plans on the pitch, with many match stars harbouring secret desires to be music stars - which would explain the number of music video cameos recently.

Just this week, Emmanuel Frimpong starred on a Lethal Bizzle remix and  Chelsea and Ivory Coast footballer Didier Drogba mande an awkward cameo alongside Julia Channel in her new music video ‘Forever in a Day’

But it's definitely no new phenomenon. Whether it’s a starring role or a blink and you’ll miss in moment, it seems there's no shortage of football stars willing to star in music videos.

From New Order’s classic hit with John Barnes' infamous rapping or this year’s 1xtra radio-hit ‘Can’t Stop We’ by Rio, which features a number of famous faces on and off the pitch - they can be a success. Or it could be as bad as Vinnie Jones starring in Westlife's 'Bop Bop Baby' video. Oh dear indeed.

So, given the recent surge in footballers in music videos, check out the best - and worst footballer music video cameos...

  • Julia Channel & Didier Drogba - 'Forever In A Day': Chelsea footballer Didier Drogba is one of the most recent footballers to make an appearance in the world of music. The striker collaborated with Julia Channel in the track 'Forever In A Day'. Although his cameo is just a brisk moment at the end of the video, his acting skills are best left on the pitch!

  • RIO - 'Can't Stop We': Another 2012 footballer appearance. Again, the cameos from Marion Balotelli and Rio Ferdinand are brief. However the track which also features appearances from Drake and Labrinth went to No.1 on 1xtra.

  • Arctic Monkeys - 'Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair': The Artic Monkeys enlisted the help of Chris Waddle to help produce another huge hit. Waddle makes appearances in the video by scoring goals for The Owls.

  • T2(Ft. Jodie) - 'Heartbroken': An earlier music video appearance from Rio Ferdinard with fellow footballer Micah Richards. Both Rio and the Richards look confused, perhaps at how shockingly bad the video is!

  • Akon - 'Oh Africa': Another awkward moment (and a terrible song) from footballer Dider Drogba and Chelsea team mate Fernando Torres. The players are filmed kicking paint balls at a wall. Once again their 'serious' acting leaves something to be desired...

  • Oasis - 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down': Italy player Allesandro Del Piero is known for his friendship with Noel Gallagher, so it was no surprise that the footballer appeared in the video. However it is the smallest cameo ever and you will probably miss it - whether you blink or not.

  • Westlife - 'Bop Bop Baby': Despite Vinnie Jones relatively successful cross over into acting, this appearance doesn't do his Hollywood career any favours. But at least he's better than Westlife - the unbearable acting from the boyband is too hard to watch.

  • New Order (Feat. John Barnes) - 'World In Motion': The 1990 music video was actually a success - although John Barnes' 'attempt' at rapping on the track became infamous. The song became the band's only ever No.1 hit and there were rumours that Barnes was to re-enact the rap for the world cup last year.

  • The Establishment - 'Be That Way': Starring Teddy Sheringham, Stuart Pearce, Les Ferdinand and Des Walker and the 'Be That Way' video also featured a whole host of other celebrities. Walker acts as an intimidating bouncer in a club and convinces in being intimidating - which comes as no surprise.

  • Edward Ball - 'The Mill Hill Self Hate Club': The England and Chelsea player Graeme Le Saux stars amongst other minor celebrities and various football players in Edward Ball's 1997 music video. The cameo is brief as the footballer pretends to be enjoying a game of table football in a greasy spoon cafe.
