The Zutons have emerged from the shadow of fellow Scouse rockers, and Deltasonic label mates, The Coral to firmly establish themselves as the premiere band in Liverpool. The band formed in 2001 originally as a four piece but were soon joined by drummer Sean’s girlfriend Abi on the saxophone, giving the band a much needed injection of glamour and diversity.
The band create a dark, creepy but glossy pop sound. McCabe’s upbeat melodies mask a twisted subject matter and their sound has been described as “Psychedelic Cartoon Punk” which pretty much sums it up.The band released a number of limited edition singles and downloads until they finally cracked the top 40 in January 2004 with ‘Pressure Point’, a schizophrenic tune that builds and builds into a frantic crescendo. ‘Pressure Point’ was followed up by another four singles including the much loved ‘You Will, You Won’t” and standalone single ‘Don’t Ever Think (Too Much). ‘Who Killed The Zutons’ is a staple in many music fans collections with its ability to cross age barriers and put a smile on many peoples faces.
The band returns in 2006 after supporting the likes of U2 with new album ‘Tired Of Hangin’ Around’ having replaced producer Ian Broudie with the legendary Steven Street. The result is a much more direct, big and live sounding album with the band clearly channelling their touring experiences into the recording studio. The albums first single ‘Why Won’t You Give Me Your Love’ gave the band their highest chart position to date and the album debuted in the charts at a more than respectable number two. In two and a half years The Zutons have gone from Merseyside underdogs to Mercury nominated, chart slaying super stars and long may it continue.
