Coldplay have revealed that their long-awaited fourth album will be called ‘Viva La Vida’.
Translated as ‘Long Live Life’, the band took the title from a painting by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
Although Kahlo died in 1954, her vibrant painting style has achieved international acclaim since the 1970s.
It was her battle with polio and constant back pain, however, that led the band to name the album in honour of her.
“She went through a lot of shit, of course,” frontman Chris Martin told Rolling Stone. “And then she started a big painting in her house that said ‘Viva la Vida’. I just loved the boldness of it.”
Martin rejected claims that the album – which is out on June 16th – would remind people of Ricky Martin’s ‘La Vida Loca’.
“Everyone thinks it comes from Ricky Martin, which is fine. I have absolute respect,” he said. “I’ve been through this before, naming something or someone and everyone saying that ‘That’s a terrible name’.
“But then saying, ‘Well, f**k you, that’s what it’s called, and I’ll be proved to be right eventually’.
"So when ‘Viva la Vida’ came along, I was kind of annoyed because I’m going to have to try and convince everybody of this, but it just felt right.”
- total fucking Mexico!

- Total fucking shite! Like always with Coldplay!

- Coldplay absolutely rule. Viva la Vida is a fantastic name and the genius that is Chris Martin will have the songs to back it up.

- I’m intriguiged. I’m sure Chris Martin won’t let me down, but I was initially surprised by the title.
He does have his reasons, and they’re usually pretty good.
Rock on Coldplay - I’ll be listening!

- coldplay is not shit, you are.
