Drake cleaned up with four awards, Green Day made strong anti-Trump statement

The 44th edition of the American Music Awards happened in Los Angeles last night. Winners were determined by a poll fans could vote in on which differs from the Grammy's which is judged by a panel of music industry elites.

The winners aren't all that surprising, the biggest names in mainstream pop cleaned up. Drake got four awards, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber and Adele received a couple, and Beyonce and Zayn, were among the other winners. But Selenea Gomez beating Adele and Rihanna for Favourite Female Artist was a turn for the books

The stand out moment of the evening came as Green Day made a political statement against Trump with an altered version of their single 'Bang Bang' live. They added in the opening chant from 1982 single by Texas hardcore outfit MDC which says: "No war, no KKK, no fascist USA." Anti-Trump sentiment was high with other artists, including Sting, - who won the Merit Awards and performed ‘I Can’t Stop Thinking About You - he made reference to the election saying he’s a “musical migrant.”

Niall Horan, Maroon 5 and Kendrick Lamar, James Bay, Fifth Harmony, Lady Gaga, DJ Khaled, John Legend, Bruno Mars, Shawn Mendes, Twenty One Pilots, The Weeknd and Justin Bieber (sort of), special duets from The Chainsmokers and Halsey, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj also played live in one bumper Sunday evening.
