Morrissey: 'This weekend's London shows may be my last'

The singer posted a statement on his fan site after failing to find a label

Morrissey has said that his forthcoming London shows this weekend "are likely to be our final ever UK shows."

The former Smiths frontman will play in Hull Arena tonight (18 September), followed by two nights at London's Hammersmith Apollo on Sunday and Monday (20 and 21 September). If his word is to be trusted, they could very well be his last.

In a statement posted to his trusty fan site True To You, Morrissey said, "There is absolutely no way that we can generate any interest from record labels in the United Kingdom, therefore the imminent two nights at Hammersmith are likely to be our final ever UK shows."

He added, "We are obsessively grateful for all interest and loyalty from our audience ... throughout 28 years ... but without new releases, there is no point in any additional touring. Thank you for so many absolutely incredible times. The pleasure and privilege is mine ..."

It's very possible that this is simply a cry for record labels to sit up and take notice - seeing as Morrissey's retirement seems to rest solely on his lack of a record contract. So watch this space.

Nonetheless, Morrissey plays what might be his final trio of UK shows over the next few days. See the dates below. For tickets and more information, click here.
