Washing Machine Broken? What to Check Before Paying for Repairs, Cover or a Replacement

A machine that won’t spin, drain or stop leaking doesn’t necessarily need replacing. Here’s how to work out what to do next — and avoid paying for protection you may already have.

A washing machine usually breaks down at the worst possible time. With a pile of wet laundry waiting, buying a new one can feel like the quickest fix. But some faults are surprisingly straightforward to resolve, while others need an engineer rather than an entirely new appliance.

Before spending anything, separate three decisions: can the problem be fixed, is someone already responsible for the repair, and would protection against future faults be worthwhile?

What Should You Check Before Booking a Washing Machine Repair?

Start with the symptom, not an assumption that the whole machine has failed.

Not draining or spinning? A blocked pump filter, kinked drain hose or unbalanced load could be responsible. Follow the appliance manual before checking any accessible filter; switch off and unplug the machine first.

Leaking water? Check visible hose connections and the door seal. If a leak continues or reaches electrical parts, stop using the appliance and seek professional help.

Banging or grinding? An uneven load might explain knocking, but persistent grinding can indicate a worn bearing or another mechanical problem. Avoid running more cycles until it has been assessed.

Won’t start or keeps stopping? Check the socket, door closure and any displayed error code. A failed door interlock, motor or control board may require a qualified repairer. Never bypass a safety mechanism.

These checks can help describe the fault, but they are not a substitute for a professional diagnosis. The consumer organisation Which? notes that some common washing machine problems are simple to resolve, while others require expert attention.

Before You Pay, Check Whether the Repair Is Already Covered

Find the purchase date and check the manufacturer’s guarantee, any existing appliance policy and the retailer’s obligations. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods should be of satisfactory quality and last a reasonable time. Your rights can extend beyond the manufacturer’s guarantee, although what you can claim depends on the circumstances and how long you’ve owned the machine.

MoneyHelper also recommends checking whether existing cover overlaps with a warranty or insurance you are considering. There is little value in paying twice for the same protection.

Is It Cheaper to Repair or Replace a Washing Machine?

Ask for the complete repair cost, not just an advertised call-out fee. Does the price include diagnosis, parts, labour, additional visits and a guarantee on the work? Then compare it with the delivered and installed cost of a suitable replacement.

For an otherwise reliable machine, replacing a pump, seal or door lock could be more sensible than starting again. Repeated breakdowns, costly drum damage or an expensive control-board repair can change the calculation. Age matters, but the actual diagnosis and quote matter more.

If a replacement is necessary, consider running costs, dimensions, capacity and removal of the old machine rather than comparing sticker prices alone.

Which Washing Machine Repair Services Are Worth Comparing?

Options include manufacturer repair teams, independent local engineers and national appliance specialists. Check experience with your exact brand and model, parts availability, what happens if the fault cannot be fixed and whether the price is genuinely fixed.

For example, Domestic & General (D&G) offers washing machine repairs through engineers approved for brands including Bosch, Samsung, Hotpoint and Indesit. Its Repair & Care option starts with an initial fixed-price repair, including call-out, parts and labour. D&G says it refunds the cost if that initial fault cannot be repaired.

If the repair succeeds, Repair & Care also provides ongoing maintenance and support, including an annual health check and covered repairs under the plan. D&G reports more than 8,000 approved engineers in its network and 2.3 million UK repairs during April 2024 to March 2025. Confirm availability and plan conditions before booking.

What Does Washing Machine Insurance Actually Cover?

Washing machine insurance is a different choice from arranging a repair for a machine that has already failed. It is intended to protect an eligible, working appliance against future problems. Policies vary, so check the terms rather than assuming all faults are included.

D&G’s appliance insurance covers accidental damage and, after the manufacturer’s guarantee ends, mechanical or electrical breakdowns. It allows as many covered repairs as needed and provides a replacement if the appliance cannot be repaired, although delivery or installation charges may apply. D&G also notes that an excess applies in the first 90 days when cover starts after the manufacturer’s guarantee has ended.

Existing faults are generally excluded: D&G says an appliance must be in good working order when cover begins. Compare premiums, excesses, exclusions and replacement terms against what you could put aside in savings instead.

FAQs

Can I Insure a Washing Machine That Is Already Broken?

An ordinary new appliance-insurance policy is not designed to pay for a fault that already exists. Explore a one-off repair or a service such as Repair & Care instead, subject to eligibility.

Who Repairs Bosch, Samsung or Hotpoint Washing Machines?

The manufacturer, an appropriate independent engineer or a specialist such as D&G may be able to help. Check your model and postcode before arranging an appointment.

Will Insurance Replace a Washing Machine if It Cannot Be Fixed?

Some plans do, including D&G’s qualifying appliance cover. Read the policy for the replacement criteria, exclusions and possible installation or delivery costs.

The best next step is rarely the same for every household: check the easy causes, establish your existing rights and cover, then compare the full cost of repair, replacement or future protection.
