An online petition will donate all its proceeds to Aids charities if it achieves its main target – to get U2 frontman Bono to retire from public life.

Organisers say the petition, which has so far raised $390, wants to help stop Bono from “leading misguided counter-productive philanthropy efforts”.

It also calls the U2 frontman “self-righteous”.

“The grassroots leaders of the global fight against AIDS didn’t ask for Bono to be their frontman. Its time for Bono to step down,” they add.

The petition - on website The Point - states that no pledge will be collected until Bono retires from public life.

U2 are currently recording their new studio album alongside Brian Eno at their home studios Dublin.

  • idiots! Bono may have an ego but he is genuine in his belief and tireless in his pursuits. He has done a huge amount to bring light to the situation he is also very knowlegeable more so than any of the Politicians.

  • In an increasingly appathetic world, Bono uses his fame to highlight what many would prefer to ignore. Those who find him self righteous should ask if it is really their own guilty conscience causing discomfort.

  • This is merely the act of a very lost individual/s.If all of us together put the type of pressure on governments that Bono does alone then we might speed up the process of securing more funding to alleviate the suffering and devastation that results from AIDS.Whoever is responsible for the petition should engage in something more productive than trying to undermine the selfless lobbying and work that Bono has done on behalf of the victims of AIDS worldwide.

  • Wow! What a fantastic idea! You have already raised a whopping $390.00 US Dollars to help fight AIDS. That will make him quit for sure. Keep up the great work; only a few hundred million more to go and Bono can retire from this cause completely. Until then, keep this weak attempt at publicity and pipedream idea of a petition alive. Personally, I dont care who the front man for this cause is as long as there is attention to the issue and money being raised. P.S. where do I sign? Boneheads!
