Lukhanya Pooe’s story is kind of like the story of our era. In another age, he might have been a street artist, doing cartoonish pictures of passersby. But he was born into a different time, one where ambition, creativity, and the tech platforms allow the modern-day artist to be everywhere all at once. He didn’t win his following by traveling from city to city or stage to stage. He found it on the internet. It’s the kind of place where a kid from Johannesburg can reach anyone.
He has created a world for himself and others to exist in — complete with its own animated character, Timon, who lives within the stories — and it’s called @TimonsDreams. It can be accessed via different platforms. It serves up color, humor, and a vivid sensibility. Anime reflects back real life, and cartoons twist reality. Everyday life suddenly seems more alive, more interesting in his world.
It’s called digital storytelling or content creation, but there’s so much more to it. Think of Lukhanya as a creative genius who is letting you peek into his studio, study his sketches, and look around his bedroom. That’s @TimonsDream. So hang out a while, have a look around.
That’s what it’s there for.
Quite the Following
Modern artists like Lukhanya measure their success in numbers of followers. They are like the subscribers of old, a metric for reach. More than 712,000 accounts follow him on TikTok, 173,000 follow him on Instagram, and he has 136,000 more on YouTube. His YouTube videos have been viewed more than 30 million times, while TikTok, which provides an environment to which his quick-witted, satirical content is remarkably well suited, has seen his reach expand. As of last count, Lukhanya’s 111 videos have received 24.6 million likes over the past two years.
It might not be money in the bag, but in a media market based on attention, it might as well be.
But what’s the recipe for his secret sauce? What are the hidden ingredients that have allowed him to stand out in a very crowded digital world? Here, Lukhanya credits his creative instincts.
“I’ve always excelled at drawing, animation, scriptwriting and storytelling,” he says. “I think all of my content is connected in a way. It’s kind of like a mosaic, it all tells the story of modern life.”
He is a one-man creative studio, churning out content. But he also knows how to edit it, tweak it, and to release it in a way that it will grab a hold of the casual scroller looking for something new.
This begs another question though. How did he get started in the content creation business?
Across Cultures

According to Lukhanya, the concept for TimonsDreams developed while he was studying in the US. As a young student, stimulated by his new environment, and pulsing with creative energies, he naturally found an outlet online, where he began to channel his quirky sense of humor and artistic talents into content. For his generation, the internet has always been the space where young minds swap notes, connect and relate. It seemed the most obvious move, to make his elixir of anime culture, gaming references, and real-life comedy available to the world wide web.
While he brought his own South African experiences and perspective to the equation, he was of course influenced by his experiences in the US, plus references and ideas he had soaked up from Japanese animation. This blend has allowed Lukhanya to reach audiences everywhere. It also allowed him to go viral, as they say, with several TikTok videos soon passing the 15 million view mark. His YouTube success garnered him a Silver Creator Award. From across the gaming, anime, manga, and lifestyle industries, they reached out.
Who was he? @TimonsDreams in addition to providing creative relief. It was the best kind of career success, one that he had stumbled into, almost without trying at all.
A Professional Streak
He’s also still a student, enrolled in a digital marketing program at the University of California, Los Angeles. “This allows me to learn the mechanics behind the platforms I am using,” says Lukhanya. It’s the equivalent of a virtuoso guitarist finally learning how to read sheet music. His coursework covers audience analytics, content strategy, and the broader economics of the creator economy. According to Lukhanya, it’s given him insight to the landscape he inhabits.
“It’s one thing to entertain people,” he remarks. “It’s another to understand why they return.”
As he chugs away with his studies and continues to post innovative and entertaining content, he’s also busily collaborated with companies and organizations. Here he’s rolled up his sleeves and been involved in SEO strategy, Amazon marketplace growth, artists campaigns, and digital advertisement. Each experience teaches him more about engaging with audiences, he says.
But when he retires to his studio, what does Lukhanya dream about? TimonsDreams, of course.
“I’m still growing the brand, and not just the number of followers,” he says. “This could be a broader entertainment platform, with animation, comics, long-form storytelling,” he goes on. Based in Los Angeles, he feels he’s in the prime spot to make that all happen. To realize his own, genuine dreams. It will take talent, courage, and luck, but Lukhanya wants to keep going.
“The most important thing to know about me is that I love what I do,” he says. “It’s always fun.”
