In this article we will discuss Donald Trump’s administration influence and how it has affected the United States online casino and sports betting industry. We will also discuss the timeline in which Donald Trump began his journey into the gaming business and how it has developed to modern day times.
Where did it all begin for Donald Trump?
The impact that Donald Trump has had on the iGaming industry is no secret, it all began when he invested in the casino business back in the 1980’s. This began in what everyone calls the seaside gaming and capital of the East Coast’ (Atlantic City).
These were the beginning of Trump’s encounter into the land based casino industry. After some considerable years eventually his business had to file for bankruptcy in 2004, after accumulating so much debt. Then again in 2007.
It is also no secret that Donald Trump’ s daughter Ivanka Trump was heavily involved in his casino business in Atlantic City Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc. Her involvement in joining the board members for his company was announced back in 2007 after she had obtained a license from the Casino Control Commission.
What happened whilst Donald Trump was in the White House?
When Donald Trump was elected back in 2017 he had quite a few focuses aside from the iGaming industry. Prior to his successful election, in 2016 Donald Trump and an American investor Philip Falcone met and tried to influence the Vietnamese government to allow their citizens to lift the ban on gambling. After the request was initially declined, Falcone spent years allowing the Vietnamese citizens to gamble in his casino in the states.
After several years of this happening, Falcone spent time pressing the Vietnamese government to change their legislations around their residents being able to gamble. What they did however push was the ideologies that Vietnamese people should favor U.S. companies including Harbinger and to do long term business in Vietnam with United States casino businesses.
What has happened after Donald Trump was elected?
Since 2017, he has been quite busy when it comes to adding new rules to the iGaming industry. In 2018 Donald Trump decided to crack down on internet lotteries and claimed that the Wire Act of 1961 law that stops sport betting through wire transmissions, should now also apply to online gambling.
This included online poker and casino style games on smartphones and computer devices. The rule ‘Wire Act of 1961’ stops bets or wagers transmitted over wired communication (aka. telephone betting).
The law intended to stop all forms of online internet gambling not just sports betting. After a lot of push back, this was eventually ruled out by the government of Utah that citizens could not purchase online lottery tickets. Still to this present day, they do not allow Utah citizens to be able to participate in the lottery or in any gambling whatsoever.
Conclusion on Donald Trump’s administration’s influence
Donald Trump’s presidential influence alone has impacted the iGaming industry in many more positive ways than just negative. However, the administration’s influence has been the icing on the cake for the overall influence and implemented changes.
The negative impact is that the Wire Act was put into force which threatened legal stability of existing casinos and lottery providers. Not only that, but the legality of lotteries and any forms of betting were restricted for citizens and industry players.
On the contrary, the positive impact that Donald Trump’s administration has had is the rapid expansion of US online sports betting across US States.
Some states have even been allowed to gamble due to the pursuit of the gambling legalisation. To conclude, we believe that Donald Trump’s administration influence has been a neutral turnover and we’re hoping there are more positive outcomes for US online casinos and sports betting providers in the future.
