More about:

In support of their new single, ‘Apply Some Pressure’, Maximo Park head out on the road with all the potential to be one of 2005’s most exiting new acts. Though the evening could not get of to a better start than with the quite splendid 28 Costumes; an eclectic bunch of popsters that swim through riffs, novelties and have all the characteristics of the Monty Python cast. The pop appeal of this Liverpool based act is phenomenal and at the close of their set the whole crowd is invited to call the band ‘c**ts as the band say â€œthose that hate us can enjoy slagging us off and the rest of you can just enjoy saying it, though we think we are really good”.

So after the extravagances of the support act we are left with baited breath for the appearance of the main act. As the Maximo Park boys take to the stage they appear to have all the ‘edgy’ cool features that the new ‘art-movement’ of music implies. As they leap into their set the sheer quirky-ness of singer, Paul Smith, becomes more and more clear throughout - the only odd one out is the remarkably uncomfortable looking bass player, Archis Tiku, who looks like a mouse chucked into a room full of really big cats. However, as the set builds towards the inevitable climax of ‘Apply Some Pressure’ the enthusiastic Barfly crowd are also treated to ten other tunes all of single worthy appeal. All the tunes are punched out by the geeky 5-some with all the enthusiasm of a heroin fuelled weather man.

As the inevitable unfortunately happens and the set closes, the crowd go ape-shit for the single and we are all left with the same thoughts. This band will go on from the obligatory first ‘Barfly’ tour to much much bigger things and for once we should all be very happy to see a band do exactly that. Stardom surely awaits.
