KT Tunstall is the female version of Jamie Cullum but without the jazz hands, and that’s nothing to be proud of. Musically, they don’t have much in common, apart from being a bit boring and a bit rubbish, but you can guarantee that they are being marketed to the same audience. 'Eye To The Telescope' is lounge music for thirtysomethings, not as pop as Dido but just as insipid. To say that the album is samey would be the understatement of the year, and seeing as it is December…well you get the picture. Disappointingly there are no interesting musical arrangements to accompany Tunstall’s drab lyrics.Whatever happened to the PJ Harvey school of female vocalists? The influence of the "Man" is all too easy to spot on this album, the songs are mostly only co-written by Tunstall and the production is just a bit too polished. Clearly this year the rock banshee style just ain’t shifting the units.
Harsh as it is to bracket Tunstall in the Katie Melua brand of middle of the road pop, "Eye To The Telescope' is just a bit too mundane to elevate her to any other description. From the smouldering look given by a salon tousled Tunstall on the album cover to the quite frankly dull lyrical content, the record just screams easy-listening. KT Tunstall has produced an album for those who like a bit of background music at their dinner parties, it might even do quite well in the mainstream chart but it’s quite an insult to anyone who’s record collection doesn’t include Ronan Keating. Buy it when you’re popping out to get the new Dido single and the Christmas Enya album or just expect to hear it when you are on hold to a life-draining big business corporation.
