Today would have been Joplin's 72nd birthday
19 January: Today should be the 72nd birthday of Janis Joplin - the wailing, exuberant, pained musician who, as Florence Welch puts it, "was so unrestrained, so free, so raw."
Except Joplin didn't make it to 72 - she didn't even make it to 30. Just sixteen days after Jimi Hendrix was found dead at the age of 27, Joplin died at the same young age, after overdosing on heroin.
There should be no romantic mythology around dying young. The deaths of these talented young musicians, which served only to deprive the world of more great music, should be held up not as an example to follow, but as a reminder of how much genius has been wasted.
In the spirit of doing just that, and in an effort to keep their legacy alive, here are 47 musicians whose lives ended long before they should have done.
