Lily Allen covers Two Door at Latitude day one

Sheezus steps up to headline, while Mogwai and Editors dazzle in Suffolk

It was a beautiful day in Suffolkk, as day one of Latitude Festival was brought to a climactic close as Editors, Mogwai and Lily Allen all took to the stage at the beautiful Suffolk event last night (Friday 18 July, 2014) - while Allen also took the time to pay tribute to Two Door Cinema Club, who had to pull out.

There’s nothing quite like hearing Editors play 'All Sparks' or 'Munich' to remind you exactly why you spent so much of your mid-teens listening to their debut album back in 2005. Since then, it’s been business as usual for Editors as, whilst they have remained in the public eye, they ever never seemed to capture the imagination with subsequent records like they did with The Back Room.

Tonight though, they roll back the years playing with the levels of intensity and enthusiasm that you may expect from a band currently trying to break into the big leagues. Tom Smith's evolution from awkward frontman to full on crowd-pleasing showman will be particularly striking for those who followed the band's rise over the best part of the last ten years. It was an unexpected triumph, and clearly one that the huge crowd at the Obelisk Arena duly appreciated.

Mogwai played the set of the weekend that is most likely to permanently damage the hearing of all those who gathered to watch them as they headlined the 6 Music stage. Morphing from serene post-rock to epic tremolo driven shoegaze in the blink of an eye, and in a way only the Glaswegian veterans can, Mogwai, in front of an impressive flashing neon light display that mirrors the artwork of most recent album Rave Tapes, provided an inimitable close to day one of Latitude 2014.

Meanwhile, Lily Allen faced her critics head-on to pull out all of the stops in replacing Two Door Cinema to headline the first night of Latitude Festival on th Obelisk Stage.

Not only did Allen appear on stage in a Two Door t-shirt, but she also performed a cover of their huge single 'Something Good Can Work' - a very fitting choice. "Do you know this one guys? Do you think we could figure this one out at such short notice?" she said introducing the track, before reading the lyrics from a sheet.

Then, backed by giant baby bottles and backing dancers, Allen showcased Sheezus as well as a career-spanning catalogue of hits to bring Friday to a close.
