28 albums you need to have heard in 2013

The best albums of the year - so far: records we love from QOTSA, C2C, Bowie, Kavinsky and more

  • Queens of the Stone Age - Like Clockwork: Certainly the best QOTSA record since Songs for the Deaf, Like Clockwork is a different beast entirely to its predecessors but its still one hell of a beast. Rather than leaning on guest collaborators as a crutch, Homme has subtly interweaved their contributions to make a layered and intense listening experience. They're back, bad-ass and doing what the hell they want.

Where the hell did 2013 go? We're over six months into the year, Glastonbury has come, gone and left us all feeling a little shellshocked and we're already making steady progress into what passes round these parts as 'summer'.

But what of the music of 2013? In short, its been brilliant. Sure, that whole 'year of the guitar band' never really happened, but guitar music has stood proud alongside brilliant electronic and pop releases this year, with big names such as Foals, Biffy Clyro, Queens Of The Stone Age and Frightened Rabbit returning to triumph in 2013.

Elsewhere we've had some spectacular French dance music (and no, not just Daft Punk), and of course, so massive comeback records from some of the biggest names in the business.

So, as we cross the midway point of 2013, look back on the albums we believe you need to have heard in the past six months.
