Alex Turner reacts to accent criticism after Glastonbury set

Arctic Monkeys singer says any change isn't deliberate

Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner has responded to criticism about his accent during the band’s Glastonbury Festival headline slot after fans complained he’d lost his natural north England inflection.

Following the band’s Pyramid Stage slot on Friday (June 28) fans took to Twitter to vent their confusion at Turner’s accent, complaining that his native Sheffield accent had been replaced by an American twang.

“A bit confused by Alex Turner’s new accent....,” one fan confessed. “He’s like Sheffield’s Elvis.”

Another posted: “Nobody seems to have mentioned Alex Turner’s weirdenheimer American accent at Glasto. Yet Joss Stone scuppered her career over the same thing.”

But according to the guitarist and singer, any change in his voice is entirely unintentional, saying he’d been practicing his stage style for a while now.

Speaking to NME after Arctic Monkey’s set Turner acknowledged the remarks, saying: “I’ve been pointing my hands for ages though! Maybe it’s just the quiff that’s confusing people?

“Jo Whiley just said I was channelling my inner Elvis, but I dunno man. It’s not intentional!”

Arctic Monkey’s closed the first night of the festival on Friday with a set of old and new material that far surpassed their previous headline effort at the festival.
