Madonna's charity work slammed as 'insult' by Malawi president

Madonna's charity work has been slammed by Malawi's president, who has labelled her African efforts an 'insult' to the country.

Joyce Banda hit out at the star as she visited the African state this week, accusing the pop star of making 'the poor dance', reports The Sun newspaper.

Madonna set up the Raising Malawi charity after adopting son David Banda in 2006 and daughter Mercy James in 2009.

But Mrs Banda claims Madonna reneged on a promise to build a £10million academy for girls and instead opted to build 10 schools - without discussing her change of plans with officials.

"Where are the ten schools?," The Sun quotes Mrs Banda as asking.

"In some cases she just renovated an already existing block. No one should just come here and say 'I'm building a classroom' without needs assessments.

"It's an insult to the people."

But last night Trevor Neilson, who manages Madonna's charitable work, provided details of the schools built by Madonna's project.

"Every single one of the schools is a free standing structure," he added.

The singer also posted pictures of herself and 16-year-old daughter Lourdes cuddling up to orphans during their stay in the country.
