Green Day are the third band to be named as headliners at this year's Reading and Leeds festivals.

The US punk icons join Biffy Clyro and Eminem at the top of the bill, after an announcement this evening (11 March 2013), named a huge number of newly added artists. This is the band's first announced UK gig since frontman Bille Joe Armstrong entered rehab in 2012.

Also appearing on the main stage at the festival are Nine Inch Nails, Frank Turner, Chase & Status, White Lies, Brand New, The Lumineers, Editors, Hadouken, Twin Atlantic, New Found Glory. Newly added to the NME / Radio One stage are Phoenix, A$ap Rocky, Major Lazer and Bastile. Also performing at this year's double header are Devlin, The Blackout, Iggy Azalea, Malory Knox, Modestep and Swim Deep.

A number of bands were previously announced in early February, when Biffy Clyro, System Of A Down, Bring Me The Horizon, Jake Bugg, Foals and Fall Out Boy were added to the bill.

Biffy Clyro were added to the Reading and Leeds line-up in February 2013

Eminem is set to perform on the main stage along with Deftones, while Alt-J are set to appear on the NME/Radio 1 tent. Sub Focus and Boy Better Know have also been confirmed, with Sub Focus to play the BBC Radio 1 Dance Stage, and Boy Better Know set for the BBC Radio 1 Xtra Stage.

Both the BBC Radio 1 Dance Stage and the BBC Radio 1 Xtra Stage are new additions to the festivals, which mark a number of changes from festival organiser Melvin Benn.

Both sites will have more live acts on the line-up, with Reading festival also being expanded and a second entrance added, while Leeds festival is to be altered so that attendees may be able to explore the woods at night.
