Hurts: 'The UK should treat Eurovision much better'

Adam Anderson compares Eurovision to the Olympics, but says the UK treats it like a joke

  • Engelbert Humperdinck: The biggest surprise of the UK's 2012 entry was that Engelbert Humperdinck is actually still alive. An uncomfortable key change and a dated sound saw the 60s singer coming in second to last.

Brooding pop duo Hurts have revealed that they want to write a Eurovision entry in the future, but say they wouldn't choose to write for the UK because 'it's a bit of a joke here'.

British Eurovison fans have been left disappointed and confused at today's announcement that Bonnie Tyler will be representing the UK for this year's event. Discussing the news, the band's pianist, guitarist and all round musician, Adam Anderson says the euro-pop competition should be taken more seriously in the UK and feels that Tyler's announcement 'sums up' the country's feelings towards the show .

Speaking exclusively to Gigwise, Anderson says: "It's admirable that in Europe they do take it seriously and I don't understand why it's become a bit of a joke here because it's a competition for songs and that's exciting.

"Where else do you get that? it's like the Olympics for songs and it should be treated like that, but it's not in this country and that [Bonnie Tyler] appointment today sort of sums that up really, but it's better than Blue isn't it?"

The Manchester pair even admit to having been close to penning a track for Russia's Eurovision entry in the past and although nothing came of the idea, it remains one of the band's many ambitions to write a track for 'one of the more obsure countries.'

Anderson continues: "We wanted to write a song for Russia, but it didn't happen in the end. We couldn't figure it all out and they went with something else.

"We'd like to write a Eurovision song for a country one day."

However, when quizzed on whether they would write for a UK entry, Anderson wasn't as keen saying, "probably not. It depends on who the artist would be and it's unlikely that the artist would be right."

Hurts' eagerly awaited second studio album, Exile is set to be released on 11 March 2013
