Biffy Clyro: 'Opposites nearly split the band'

Personal and professional pressure could have ruined Biffy, but album is now set to score band a No.1

  • Four Tet - 0181: Four Tet's latest surprise offering 0181 is a mix of early work and rarities, and shows just why he remains one of the most exciting electronic musicians. The album is essentially one track, with various musical threads tangling and untangling throughout. Mesmerising and engaging, 0181 makes thirty eight minutes seem like no time at all - and soon you'll be blinking awake from what feels like a half-forgotten dream.

Biffy Clyro almost split up while they were making Opposites, due to the pressure they were under.

The band were not only dealing with difficulties in their personal lives, but band member Ben Johnston was battling alcoholism at the time.

Frontman Simon Neil says, "We've had a lot to deal with. My wife had a couple of miscarriages last year, which is really tough."

He continues, "Benny had been drinking heavily for a few years and he'd given up. But he was losing interest. He was late, missing things.

"It was the first time I felt, 's**t, everything could fall apart - with my wife but also with Biffy.'"

The band have previously spoken about the problems they encountered while making the double album to The Guardian - specifically, about Johnston's alcohol issues.

Luckily, Biffy Clyro managed to keep the band together

Neil told the paper, "It was black and white. Either the drink stops or we stop. If we'd made a record in that situation we would have been acting, and that's not what being in a band is - and it's not what being friends is.

"It so happened that the timing of it [on the eve of recording] was so, so bad ... but it turned out to be the best thing that's ever happened to us."
