A recording, thought not to even exist, of Sir Paul McCartney singing 'A World Without Love' has been found by Peter Asher of Peter and Gordan.

The track was written by McCartney and given to the duo almost half a century ago when it became a No.1 hit in both the UK and US back in 1964.

The single was only ever thought to be performed by Peter Asher and his partner Gordan Waller, but it appears that the unearthed tape contains a McCartney recording of 'A World Without Love'.

Asher, who discovered the tape a few months ago in LA told Rolling Stone: "He (Paul) had two tape machines and I had one - we were both into taping. Paul told me about the song and played it for me."

Although there are no plans to release the discovery, Asher will be playing the recording on his US tour, Peter Asher: A Musical Memoir Of The '60s And Beyond.

Asher went on to explain that McCartney had told him that nobody wanted the song and his fellow Beatle, John Lennon didn’t like the composition. When asked about 'A World Without Love', Lennon once said: "I think that was resurrected from the past. That has the line ‘Please lock me away’ that we always used to crack up at."
