Matt Bellamy more 'honest' on stage than in 'everyday life'

Matt Bellamy has revealed that the only place he feels comfortable being himself is when he is fronting Muse onstage.

The lead singer has admitted that being onstage makes him feel as though he doesn't have to restrain himself as he would in everyday life.

Bellamy told Classic Rock magazine: "If anything, you're more honest onstage. Up there, the true self comes out. The socialisation levels we use to modify our behaviour for everyday life can peel away."

"It's only in everyday life where you have to put on the jacket, the mask."

Bellamy also explained that he and his Muse bandmates were known to smash the odd instrument in their early years. Even if it was just for 'cathartic' reasons.

He continued: "In our early years I was genuinely a bit more... I wouldn't say angry, but I was definitely prone to 'anger moments'. I would explode. On those early tours it was a cathartic experience for us. The gear-trashing was the real thing."

Muse will be embarking on a huge European tour in May as they look to cement their status as one of the biggest rock bands in the world.

Although they have grown out of the 'gear-trashing', Bellamy will be looking forward to expressing himself onstage.

He said: "I like to think that when I go to see other artists I'm seeing what's going on deep down inside of them. You get a sense of freedom to express yourself any way you want to. You can say anything you want to, do anything you want, behave as you want."
