Thom Yorke took to twitter today to announce that Atoms For Peace will release their debut album on February 25 2013.

The nine-track record, which will be called Amok, is already available to pre-order on the group's website, with artwork for the record posted on the site.

Atoms For Peace, who take their name from a 1953 speech given by President Eisenhower, first got together in 2009 with the intention of learning to play Yorke's solo album, The Eraser.

Yorke teamed up with Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, long-term Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker on drums and Mauro Refosco on percussion for the project.

In a post on Radiohead's website today Yorke explains: "We formed to learn to play The Eraser record, if you don't know that, and discovered a really good energy from doing that... and it fell into this record."

The group's first live performance was at the Echoplex in Los Angeles in 2009 where they played Yorke's solo album in its entirety.

In 2010 the band played a show at the Roseland Ballroom during which Yorke announced a track as being 'the band's first official collaborative song', although the band had in fact played the track at earlier shows.

Before 2010 the band had simply been known as ?????? or Thom Yorke????.

During interviews in 2011 Yorke and Flea mentioned that they had been working on a record together and that Godrich would be its producer.

"I'm still reeling from being on tour for much of the year [with Radiohead] but we are planning to get together and play etc next year! We're figuring it out right now," Yorke continues on the Radiohead site.

"Atoms is a ongoing and open ended project, where it leads I know not for certain... which is what's nice about it."

So far Atoms For Peace have only played one show outside the US - a 2010 performance at Fuji Rock.

British fans will be hoping that the news of the album's release date will be followed by news of a European tour.

The full tracklisting for Amok is:

02 Default
03 Ingenue
04 Dropped
05 Unless
06 Stuck Together Pieces
07 Judge Jury and Executioner
