12 great albums of 2012 that nobody listened to

If these aren't on your playlists already - they should be. Overlooked classics from the past year

  • The Orb ft Lee Scratch Perry present The Observer In The Star House: Right, so we all know Lee Scratch Perry's loopy, but that's never got in the way of him being one of the most innovative dub creators in the history of the genre. The pairing with come-down-favourites The Orb produced a cosmic collection of bubbling rhythms and etherall soundscapes that make the most of Perry's vocal ramblings. While this was one of the most authentic pieces of dub music not just this year but of the last five (maybe 10) years, it was also an insanely well executed piece of production and a great demonstration of how to take a genre forward without loosing its essence. Sadly outside of the reggae/dub fraternity the album slipped by, with people put off by the idea of a dub record. A remark in the Guardian that it was 'a record for dub fanatics' was wildly unfair and has played a big part in general music fans missing out on a terrific record.

There are usually one or two albums a year that you absolutely adore, but for some infuriating reason just don't get the recognition they deserve.

You spend weeks listening intensely to some great records that it seems just no one else is listening to. It's a sad fact that all too often great albums do slip through the net in an age when it's so hard to fight against The X Factor culture and the increasing number of acts who put out talentless blobs of garbarge get into the top of the charts. Not naming any names, of course...

So this list is our homage to the brilliant albums that have had some of us enthralled, but have eluded so many this year.

Take a look through our gallery and see if you find any forgotten favourites.
