Jarvis Cocker reveals Pulp won't record new music

Pulp frontman dashes fans' hopes of a new album, saying the band still struggle with old material

Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker has revealed there will be no new Pulp music, despite a string of huge reunion shows in 2012.

The band returned to the live stage this year including a performance at Coachella Festival and an upcoming Sheffield gig on 8 December 2012. Earlier this year it appeared that Cocker was uncertain about potential new music from the band, but now he appears certain that it will not happen.

"No, it was a big enough challenge to learn how to play all the old songs and, hopefully, perform them in a convincing way," Cocker told Q magazine when asked about new Pulp music. "It also means you aren't trying to flog anything to anyone – then you have to do interviews and convince people they have to go and but this new record as well! It was kinda nice not to have to do that."

Earlier this year, Cocker told NME that the focus was on Pulp's live shows, telling the magazine: "I don't know about that. I mean, I've enjoyed doing these shows because the idea was, could we manage to do it again, to make it feel like it was worth doing and to make it sound right? And I think we managed to do that."

In July this year, he still seemed open to recording new Pulp material, adding: "I suppose once you've done that, the next thing is; would you make some new music? I've enjoyed the fact that we haven't been doing any new stuff, because I feel that's kept it quite simple. It's hard one. We haven't been in the studio or anything. I don't know what will happen in the future."

Despite hugely successful live shows, Pulp have no intention of recording new music

The band's Sheffield gig is the last the 'Common People' band have lined up at the moment, and Cocker has also hinted it may be the band's last.

"We'll just be cruising off into the sunset," he adds in the Q interview. "Seems poetic. Not wishing to make a big deal, but we've played for a while and it's been really good, but you can't keep doing that forever. Will you see Pulp again? Who knows. I'm not stoking those particular rumours."

Tickets for Pulp's Sheffield show are on sale now. For more information visit Gigwise Gig Tickets.
