Rock star Jon Bon Jovi has spoken for the first time about his daughter's recent overdose and subsequent arrest.

The singer told a Los Angeles televison channel he was thankful for the support of well wishers and how is own experiences with drugs will help the family get through the problem.

"It's human," he said. "This tragedy was something I had to face, too, so we'll get through it.

"People's incredible warm wishes for my family and I have been really reassuring. So, we're good."

The frontman's daughter, Stephanie Rose Bongiovi, was found unresponsive in her college dorm last week, at Hamilton College. Stephanie and a male friend, who called the emergency services, were initially arrested on suspicion of possession of heroin and marijuana.

But the charges against them were soon dropped thanks to a new 'good Samaritan' law passed in New York. Under the new law, immunity from prosecution is granted to anyone who is seeking help during a life-threatening overdose.

Bon Jovi spoke about the incident with his daughter while promoting the upcoming film Stand Up Guys, for which he has provided original music.

The news of his daughter's arrest came soon after Jovi had already had to cut short a UK promotion tour to return to his family in New York, where there home had been badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Bon Jovi is set to perform at the 12-12-12 concert at Madison Square Garden in December to benefit those affected by the hurricane.

Other acts confirmed for the benefit show include The Who, Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen.
