Travellers at Oklahoma's Will Rogers Airport might not be the The Flaming Lips biggest fans  after the band's frontman tried to board a plane with a grenade and caused the airport to be shut down.

The grenade, which wasn't live, was apparently accidentally packed by singer Wayne Coyne.

Coyne was flying to Los Angeles to see the preview of the new Flaming Lips musical, Yoshimi Battle the Pink Robots. The dead grenade was reportedly given to Coyne at a party as a joke.

Despite the grenade not being live, it caused a rather unsurprising response from the airport's TSA, who shut down the terminal.

According to a police report of the incident, the TSA panicked at the sight of the grenade because they didn't have any 'bomb guys' at the scene.

Needless to say the scare resulted in many missed flight and lots of wasted money, but Coyne was let go once the police confirmed the grenade was dead. After the incident Coyne tweeted: "Sorry Sorry Sorry!! Everyone that was inconvenienced because of my grenade at OKC airport!!"

The Flaming Lips won't be expecting to loose to many fans in Oklahoma, though.

As natives of the city, the groups songs 'Do You Realize??' was choosen as the official rock song of Oklahoma in 2009.

Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry said at the time: "They are proud ambassadors of their home state...They were clearly the people's choice."

Earlier this year the group released The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, an album that saw them collaborating with artists like Ke$ha, Nick Cave and Erykah Badu.

In June this year the group borke Jay-Z's record for the most live concernts in 24 hours by playing eight shows across the 27th and 28th.

Their next full length studio album is expected early in 2013.
