Gigwise session: The Lumineers cover Bob Dylan

Video: Denver folk-stars cover Dylan classic 'Boots Of Spanish Leather'

  • Brittany Howard: The singer and guitarist of the old school American rock band, The Alabama Shakes, has gained attention from all over due to her soulful voice. The Shakes, who are BFFs (sort of) with Jack White, are doing their best to live up to the hype. Let's hope their next album is even better than their debut Boys & Girls.

The Lumineers have recently made massive waves in the UK. Following the release of their self-titled debut album earlier this year, recent single 'Hey Ho' has been a huge success - scoring the band that rare achievement, a hit single.

But the Denver trio aren't letting their swift rise to fame faze them, despite the ever-growing crowds turning up to their previously intimate gigs, they take everything in their stride.

"As we've gradually begun playing bigger venues the sound still seems to work well", The Lumineers tell Gigwise.

"When we started we used to just do a lot of house shows, and now we find it doesn't feel too different playing to 2000 people."

The band have a heartfelt folk sound that brims with honesty. For them, simplicity is the key, they prefer to spend their time honing the craft of their song-writing as opposed to being influenced by the 'ideas of grandeur' that come from big name producers.

"One of the things I noticed when we were early songwriters was that we tried to avoid a lot of clutter, so we kept very minimal mind-sets" the band recall.

"I think that what can happen is bands go into the studio with a producer and get swayed by reverb and delay, and that can sound cool but we like just laying it down with the cello and stuff."

The success of 'Hey Ho' has also been helped by its use on a recent TV advert for the 'Bing' internet search engine. The band recognise the boost this has provided and insist it would be "short-sighted" to accuse them of selling out.

"It's a good way to show people our music who otherwise might not hear it. I think that some bands might be like 'oh now we've got a record deal we don't need to do anything like that'- but that can be short-sighted."

The band followed their Gigwise session with their biggest UK gig to date- a sold out show at London's Koko. The Lumineers frontman Wesley Schultz performed a cover of Bob Dylan's 'Boots Of Spanise Leather'. Watch the performance below.

Again they seem perfectly comfortable with the venue's 1,500 capacity. But what they are really looking forward to is scaling the arenas of the USA when they go on tour with The Dave Matthews Band this month.

"They're all huge arena shows so it's going to be crazy!" the band predict, "The biggest show we have ever played in Denver was to like 600 people, but these are going to be to like 16,000!"

Next February The Lumineers will return to the UK to embark on a seven-date tour. Full details are below. For more information visit Gigwise Gig Tickets.
