Robbie Williams banned by Radio 1 for being 'irrelevant' to audience

Robbie Williams is set for a No.1 single this week - but Radio One are refusing to play 'Candy' because they feel Williams is irrelvant to their listeners.

The stations is keen to attract a younger demographic, and their new focus was one of the reasons behind firing Chris Moyles from the breakfast show earlier this year. Now former Take That star Robbie has fallen foul of the station's new age restrictions.

Robbie hasn't lost all support from the BBC however, with Radio 2 placing 'Candy' on their A-List alongside other 'older' artists including The Rolling Stones and Donald Fagan.

A spokesperson for Radio One tells The Sun newspaper that the choice not to play Robbie Williams' music is due to relevancy rather than age, saying: "Radio 1 see it not as a question of age, but of relevance. They think there are acts more appropriate to their target audience of 15-29."

Other huge acts to have been ditched by Radio One include Madonna, Coldplay and Muse - three of the biggest acts in the world.

However, even without support from one of the UK's biggest radio stations, Robbie is set for a No.1 single this week.

He is on course to knock Emeli Sande and Labrinth from No.1 and score his first No.1 single in eight years. He releases new album Take The Throne next week, and will celebrate the release by turning on the Christmas lights on London's Oxford Street and meeting fans at HMV on 5 November.
