Newly revealed BBC figures have shown that Chris Moyles left the Radio One breakfast show, with a disappointingly low audience - described as an all time low for the presenter.

Moyles, 38, only had 6.73million people listening to the show when he left after his eight and a half year stint on the breakfast show, after having lost 200,000 listeners in a quarter. Moyles was recently replaced by new host Nick Grimshaw - the 27-year-old was considered a better fit as the station attempts to bring in a younger audience.

But Radio 4 went from strength to strength, as the Today programme actually gained 200,000 listeners in just three months.

According to the latest radio audience figures from Rajar, the Today programme had 6.9million listeners and Radio 4 overall had 10.85million listeners turning in weekly.

And although Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans saw his audience fall by more than 400,000 listeners over the summer, he's still the biggest breakfast DJ on the radio with listeners totalling 8.55million - leaving him way out in front. Radio 2 overall is also the biggest in the UK, with an audience of 13.9million.

Nick Grimshaw: has no rivalry with Chris Moyles despite replacing him

The BBC's director of audio and music, Tim Davie, said he was pleased about the figures. He said, "It's encouraging to see that the radio industry as a whole is in good health and impressive that it has held up over the Olympic summer.

"I'm thrilled that, despite there being so much competition for people's time and attention, three of our digital stations have hit record highs."

Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw denied rumours of a rivalry between him and Chris Moyles last month, despite the fact that he'd essentially replaced Moyles.

He told the Daily Mirror, "I think he thought he wouldn't get on with me, then we worked together and we fell in love! I love listening to him on the radio and I love him as a pal as well.

"It’s terrifying taking over that show. It’s been so much easier as he’s been saying nice things."
