Mumford & Sons have said they were accused of attempting to smuggle people across the US-Mexico border while they were on tour in a vintage train.

The folk band were nearly forced to miss a date on the tour because of the mix-up, as Texas police thought the train was being used for people trafficking.

Luckily, the band convinced the police that they were simply musicians and ended up playing football with the coppers.

Bassist Ted Dwane told the Sunday Times: "In Marfa, Texas, we were pulled over by police waiting for us with cars across the track. They accused us of stowing people away on the train.

"It was edgy, but the gig eventually went ahead," he added. "We swelled the town about fivefold and ended up playing soccer with the police."

The band were travelling on the train as part of their 'Big Easy Express - Railroad Revival Tour' in 2011, along with Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show.

Mumford & Sons are set to appear on the new series of 'Later... With Jools Holland', along with The Killers, The Beach Boys and Muse.

They will also appear on the new series of popular US comedy show 'Saturday Night Live', along with Muse and Frank Ocean.

The band release their second album on September, and the video to recent single 'I Will Wait' can be watched below.
