You Me At Six, Kindness, TEED: who we wanted for the Mercurys

Gigwise picks 12 albums deserving of nomination

  • You Me At Six - Sinners Never Sleep: No, wait, come back. Look back through the Mercury Music Prize nominees and you soon realise that some absolute stinkers have made the grade. For every Arctic Monkeys there's a nomination for The View. Jesus, M People won the thing in 1994. With that in mind, it only seems fair that the Prize acknowledges that many of the finest metal/ rock bands in the world come from these shores and that they deserve a little recognition. It seems wrong that a band the size of You Me At Six are basically told their music is not worthwhile whilst Speech Debelle has a winners trophy gathering dust on her mantelpiece. David Renshaw

Tonight in London (12 September 2012) the 12 albums nominated for this year's Mercury Music Prize will be revealed. The annual award honours the best albums released over the past year and is one of the most respected awards in the UK music industry.

It's very possible that the nominees that will be made up of a handful of aging UK artists, Emeli Sande and a few acoustic artists very few have heard of, but the list of favourites for nominations is very exciting indeed.

Ahead of the Mercury Music Prize nominations announcement, Gigwise has pulled together our 12 favourite British albums from the past 12 months and explain why we think each deserves a nomination at this year's Mercury's. We'd be happy if just a few of these made the cut.

Check out our choices now - and let us know who you want to pick up a nomination at this year's awards.
