You Me At Six, Kindness, TEED: who we wanted for the Mercurys

Gigwise picks 12 albums deserving of nomination

  • Jessie Ware - Devotion: Jessie Ware ticks a lot of the boxes Mercury judges tend to look to in their selections and it would be a surprise if Devotion was not included in the shortlist when it is announced on Wednesday (Sept 12). Critically adored and making music that has a foot in the future but its heart beating loudly in the past, Jessie could be the dark horse to take the prize home overall when the winner is announced later in the year. Tonight in London (12 September 2012) the 12 albums nominated for this year's Mercury Music Prize will be revealed. The annual award honours the best albums released over the past year and is one of the most respected awards in the UK music industry.

It's very possible that the nominees that will be made up of a handful of aging UK artists, Emeli Sande and a few acoustic artists very few have heard of, but the list of favourites for nominations is very exciting indeed.

Ahead of the Mercury Music Prize nominations announcement, Gigwise has pulled together our 12 favourite British albums from the past 12 months and explain why we think each deserves a nomination at this year's Mercury's. We'd be happy if just a few of these made the cut.

Check out our choices now - and let us know who you want to pick up a nomination at this year's awards.
