Local Natives lose a member, work with The National on new album

Band relocate to New York for second album sessions

Friday 7th September 2012 by David Renshaw

Local Natives have spoken about their new album for the first time, revealing that it will be released in the early period of 2013 and is co-produced by Aaron Dessner of The National.

The band, who released their debut 'Gorilla Manor' in 2010, have also parted ways with bassist Andy Hamm in a split they call 'heartbreaking'.

Speaking to Pitchfork about their reasons for working with Dessner on new material, ,att Frazier of the band said: "One night, after maybe drinking a little bit too much, he was like, "Maybe I should work with you guys." We were like, "Sure, buddy." After meeting with all these other producers, it just seemed like we should work with somebody we really get along with and respect as a songwriter."

The band, famed for their melodic songs and uplifting spirit have also changed their tone on new songs too, according to Kelcey Ayer.

It's a heavier record for us. You'd see the [potential titles] and be like, "Heavy metal." We got a lot deeper on this album. Gorilla Manor is a little lighter on the surface," he says.

Local Natives return to the UK in December as part of The National curated All Tomorrows Parties event.
