The biggest flops of the year: Mariah Carey, MDNA and more

The music disasters of 2012

  • Viva Brother announced they their split in March after releasing just one album and a string of singles that had failed to chart. The band had previously been NME cover stars and were tipped for the top, but success never really materialised and the band have since resurfaced with a Hurts-aping sound as Lovelife. But whatever happens next, expect the tag of 'former failed britpop copycats Viva Brother' to follow them wherever they go.

Mariah Carey's big music comeback hasn't been the huge success she may have been hoping for - new single 'Triumphant' only managed to claw its way to No.115 in the US chart. Ouch indeed.

But why is this? Is her career over, or is she just another casualty of the worldwide recession? Either way, she's not the only one who's faced chart underperformance, been dropped by their label, or incurred criticism from fans.

Here we list the biggest flops and dissappointments in the music industry this year - some will undoubtedly dust themselves off and try again, but some we may never hear from again (if indeed we heard from this year in the first place)...
