George Michael has been accused of self promotion during his performance at the Olympic closing ceremony, after including his new single 'White Light' in his slot.

The former Wham! frontman was performing his first gig since his battle with pneumonia in front of the thousands in the stadium, and millions at home, and although his rendition of classic track 'Freedom' was very well recieved, his performance of the new single left viewers confused.

None of the other acts, which varied massively in genre and generation, played any new material, so some people have been left feeling that Michael abused the platform for his own promotion, and that it wasn't in the spirit of the Olympics.

Accorsing to one member of the crowd, as reported by The Telegraph, "People were not booing him, but they were just not paying attention. People were just chatting to themselves."

Steve Anderson, musical director to stars such as Westlife and Leona Lewis announced to his 9000 folowers on Twitter, "Not the time for new single promo - sorry George. I'm genuinely surprised he was allowed to do this. That was genuinely uncomfortable [all sic]."

George Michael was also accused of miming during his performances. Fellow pop star Boy George took to Twitter to write: "Mime of the century."
