Tom Petty and Lana Del Rey took to the stage for spectacular performances last night (22 June, 2012) at the Isle Of Wight festival after fears that rain and mud could derail the festival entirely.

Performing to soaking, mud-splattered crowds, Lana Del Rey thrilled crowds with tracks from her chart topping debut album 'Born To Die' while sporting the beehive hairstyle she was seen with at last weekend's Lovebox festival in London.

However, while Lana Del Rey is gearing up for a summer packed with festival performances, Tom Petty's headline show marked his first ever headline slot at a UK event. The music legend performed tracks such as 'Listen To Her Heart', 'You Wreck Me' and unforgetable hit 'I Won't Back Down'. The NME report Petty to have been leading the audience with conductor-like arm gestures and that he also performed tracks from his former supergroup, The Travelling Wilburys - which was made up of Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne.

Other performers at the opening night included Elbow, Noah and the Whale and Example.

Many festival goers suffered hours of misery on Thursday and Friday after terrible weather conditions left the festival car park inaccessible, forcing early arrivals to sleep in their cars on Thursday night - while others were stranded on ferries or were forced to seek shelter in a local football club.
