From foul-mouthed US rappers to terminally-shy Aussie pop-rockers to super-cool pioneers of international electronica, the coming year is set to be massive for female musicians.

Already in 2012, Lana Del Rey has topped the UK album charts with her debut album 'Born To Die' while newcomers Rita Ora and Kimbra have scored No.1 singles with guest spots on hit singles by DJ Fresh and Gotye.

Meanwhile, the likes of Azealia Banks, Lianne Le Havas and Icona Pop have built their reputation through word of mouth and stunning live shows.

With mainstream artists such as the much-hyped Emeli Sande chasing Adele-esque success, we turn to the artists making music a little more alternative, and a little more exciting in 2012. The coming months are sure to throw many more names in our paths, but two months into the year, all hail the first ladies of music...
