Martin Rinkart was a German Lutheran pastor and hymn writer, born in 1586 in Eilenburg, Saxony. He lived during one of Europe’s hardest times, the Thirty Years’ War, when famine, disease, and violence took many lives.
At times, he was the only surviving clergyman, conducting dozens of funerals each day. Despite the loss around him, he kept his faith strong and used his hymns to offer comfort, strength, and peace.
His work still speaks to readers and singers today. Rinkart died in 1649, remembered for his courage and faith.
