The latest trend to clog up your Facebook newsfeed is the ALS ice bucket challenge - and the craze is starting to spread to a fair few high profile musicians.

The challenge, which involves participants filming themselves having a bucket of ice water poured over their head, is in aid of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease or Motor Neurone disease.

The rules seem to have become a little confused, with some people assuming taking part in the challenge is an alternative to donating to the charity, but the ALS Association has reportedly raised nearly $3 million since the trend began.

Artists such as Gwen Stefani, Taylor Swift, Weird Al Yankovic, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and Cage The Elephant have taken part in the challenge. Watch some of them below.
