Recent controversies surrounding lip-syncing aside, 'The Star-Spangled Banner' has served the US pretty well as a national anthem. But it might not be long before an R Kelly track takes its place.
Fans have filed a petition with the White House administration asking that R Kelly's 'Ignition (Remix)' be made the new national anthem, and it already has 2,000 signatures.
That said, they require 100,000 signatures by the April 2 if the White House is going to respond.
The petition form reads: "We, the undersigned, would like the Obama administration to recognise the need for a new national anthem, one that even a decade after its creation, is still hot and fresh out of the kitchen.
"America has changed since Francis Scott penned our current anthem in 1814," the petition continues.
"Since then, we have realised that after the show, it's the afterparty, and that after the party, it's the hotel lobby, and - perhaps most importantly - that 'round about four, you've got to clear the lobby, at which point it's strongly recommended that you take it to the room and freak somebody."
The bid concludes: "President Obama: we ask you to recognise the evolution of this beautiful country and give us an anthem that better suits the glorious nation we have become."
The petition might still be a long way off, but stranger things have happened.
R Kelly's feelings about the petition are, as yet, unclear
Perhaps one day we'll see sporting crowds around the US stand proudly and sing, in moving unison: "Now I'm not tryin' to be rude/But hey pretty girl I'm feelin' you/The way you do the things you do/Remind me of my Lexus coup."
R Kelly released his 11th studio album last June and in Novemeber announced his plans to write a prequel book to his hip-hop opera Trapped In The Closet in addition to adapting the project into a Broadway musical.
